What it is

A word problem hides a calculation inside a real situation. The skill is turning the words into the right operation.

Why it matters

Word problems develop mathematical reasoning and translation (turning language into calculations) which is exactly how math is used outside the classroom.

How to do it

  1. Read carefully and note what you are asked to find.
  2. Pull out the numbers and the words that signal the operation (in all, left, each, share).
  3. Write the number sentence, solve it, and answer with the correct units.

Examples by level

  • BeginnerChaeyoung picks up 9 stopwatches on Monday and 10 more on Tuesday. How many stopwatches is that in all?19
  • IntermediateJoaquin had 24 water bottles and gave away 12. How many water bottles does Joaquin have left?12
  • AdvancedGrace has 14 grapes. Caleb has 4 times as many. How many grapes does Caleb have?56

Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Grabbing the numbers and guessing an operation without reading carefully.
  • Answering a different question than the one asked.
  • Dropping the units from the final answer.

Tips

  • Underline the question so you answer what's actually asked.
  • Always include units in your answer.

For parents

Have your child underline the question and circle the key numbers before doing any arithmetic.

For teachers

Vary contexts and names deliberately (as these do) so students generalise the strategy rather than pattern-matching the wording.

Key vocabulary

operation
add, subtract, multiply, or divide
estimate
a rough answer used to check reasonableness

Frequently asked questions

How do I help my child with word problems?
Read slowly, identify what's being asked, pull out the numbers and signal words, then choose the operation before calculating.
What are signal words in word problems?
Words that hint at the operation, 'in all' suggests addition, 'left' subtraction, 'each' multiplication or division.
