What it is
Addition puts amounts together to find the total, called the sum.
Why it matters
Fluent addition is the foundation for every later topic: subtraction, multiplication, money, and multi-step problem solving all lean on it. Automatic recall of addition facts frees a child's working memory to focus on the harder reasoning around them.
How to do it
- Line up the digits by place value, ones under ones, tens under tens.
- Add each column, starting from the right.
- If a column makes 10 or more, carry the extra digit to the next column.
Examples by level
- Beginner6 + 31 =37
- Intermediate93 + 69 =162
- Advanced1221 + 256 =1477
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to carry when a column totals ten or more.
- Misaligning place values in multi-digit sums.
- Losing track when adding three or more numbers.
Tips
- Adding 0 doesn't change a number.
- You can add in any order: 3 + 5 = 5 + 3.
For parents
Practice little and often. Five focused minutes a day beats one long weekly session for building recall.
For teachers
Mix horizontal fact practice with stacked column work so students connect the facts they know to the standard algorithm.
