What it is
Division splits an amount into equal groups, or finds how many groups fit.
Why it matters
Division consolidates multiplication understanding and is essential for fractions, averages, unit rates, and real-world sharing problems.
How to do it
- Ask: how many times does the divisor fit into the dividend?
- Use a multiplication fact in reverse to find it.
- Anything left over is the remainder.
Examples by level
- Beginner2 ÷ 1 =2
- Intermediate13 ÷ 3 =4 R 1
- Advanced421 ÷ 31 =13 R 18
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the dividend and divisor.
- Dropping the remainder or mishandling it.
- Losing place-value alignment during long division.
Tips
- Dividing by 1 leaves the number unchanged.
- You cannot divide by 0.
- Division undoes multiplication.
For parents
Connect division to multiplication: ask 'what times the divisor gives this number?' to turn a division fact into a known multiplication fact.
For teachers
Introduce remainders concretely (leftover objects) before formal notation so 'R' isn't just a symbol.
Key vocabulary
- dividend
- the number being divided
- divisor
- the number you divide by
- quotient
- the result
Frequently asked questions
- What is long division?
- Long division is the step-by-step algorithm (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) used for dividing by larger numbers.
- When are remainders introduced?
- Remainders typically appear around Grade 5 once basic division facts are secure.
