What it is
Slope measures the steepness of a line: how much it rises for each unit it runs. m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁).
Why it matters
Slope is the foundation of linear relations, graphing, and rates of change, the core of Grade 9 math and everything built on functions afterward.
How to do it
- Label your two points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂).
- Subtract the y-values for the rise, and the x-values (in the same order) for the run.
- Divide rise by run and simplify the fraction.
Examples by level
- BeginnerSlope through (5, 0) and (6, 1) =1
- IntermediateSlope through (-4, 0) and (-6, 10) =-5
- AdvancedSlope through (6, 2) and (-7, 4) =-2/13
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting coordinates in a different order top and bottom.
- Mixing up rise and run.
- Forgetting to simplify the fraction.
Tips
- Subtract the coordinates in the same order top and bottom.
- A negative slope falls left to right; zero slope is flat.
For parents
Say it out loud: 'change in y over change in x.' Keeping the order consistent avoids sign errors.
For teachers
Connect slope to real rates (speed, cost per unit) so it isn't just a formula.
Key vocabulary
- slope
- rise over run
- rise

Frequently asked questions
- How do you find slope from two points?
- Subtract the y-values for the rise, subtract the x-values in the same order for the run, then divide and simplify.
- What does a negative slope mean?
- The line falls from left to right; a positive slope rises, and a zero slope is horizontal.
