What it is
Simplifying an expression means rewriting it in a shorter, equivalent form, either by combining like terms (terms with the same variable), by using the distributive property to remove brackets, or by adding two binomials together term by term.
Why it matters
Simplifying is the algebra skill everything else depends on: solving equations, factoring, and graphing all require a student to first rewrite an expression cleanly. Getting it automatic here removes a source of errors everywhere else.
How to do it
- If there are brackets, multiply the number outside by every term inside.
- Group terms with the same variable together, and group the plain numbers together.
- Add or subtract each group to get the simplified expression.

Common mistakes

- Only combine terms that have the exact same variable, 3x and 5 can't be combined.
- The sign in front of a term belongs to that term when you move it around.
- When adding two binomials, add the x-terms to each other and the constants to each other, keeping every sign.
