What it is
Percent means 'out of 100'. 50% is one half, 25% is one quarter, 10% is one tenth.
Why it matters
Percentages drive discounts, taxes, tips, interest, and statistics, some of the most-used math in adult life and a core financial-literacy skill.
How to do it
- Turn the percent into a fraction of 100.
- Multiply the amount by that fraction.
- Tip: to find 10%, just divide by 10.
Examples by level
- Beginner10% of 20 =2
- Intermediate5% of 60 =3
- Advanced60% of 20 =12
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the percent with the amount.
- Forgetting to convert the percent to a decimal or fraction.
- Misplacing the decimal when computing.
Tips
- Find 10% by dividing by 10, then scale up.
- 50% is just half.
For parents
Anchor to benchmarks: 10% is 'move the decimal one place', 25% is 'a quarter', 50% is 'half'.
For teachers
Move from benchmark percents to non-benchmark ones (the hard band) so students build flexible strategies, not just memorised cases.
Key vocabulary
