What it is

A number pattern follows a rule. Find the rule, then you can continue the pattern.

Why it matters

Spotting and extending patterns is early algebraic thinking; describing a rule is the first step toward writing expressions and functions.

How to do it

  1. Look at how each number changes to the next one.
  2. Work out the step: how much it adds or subtracts each time.
  3. Apply the same rule to find the next number.

Examples by level

  • Beginner5, 4, 3, 2, ___ =1
  • Intermediate12, 10, 8, 6, ___ =4
  • Advanced59, 48, 37, 26, ___ =15

Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the rule from only the first two terms.
  • Applying the rule inconsistently.
  • Missing the direction of the pattern (mistaking a shrinking pattern for a growing one).

Tips

  • Check the rule works for every step, not just the first.
  • Patterns can grow (add) or shrink (subtract) by the same step each time.

For parents

Ask your child to say the rule out loud in words before continuing the pattern.

For teachers

Include growing and shrinking patterns so students don't assume patterns always increase.
