What it is
A linear equation is a balance: whatever you do to one side you must do to the other to keep it equal while you isolate the variable.
Why it matters
Solving equations is the core skill of algebra and the gateway to functions, graphing, and virtually all of secondary and post-secondary math.
How to do it
- Simplify each side, then collect the variable terms on one side.
- Undo addition or subtraction first, then undo multiplication or division.
- State the value of x and check it in the original equation.
Examples by level
- Beginner2x = 2x = 1
- Intermediate8x − 4 = 4x − 12x = -2
- Advanced10x − 8 = 11x + 4x = -12
Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.
Common mistakes
- Doing an operation to only one side of the equation.
- Sign errors when moving terms across the equals sign.
- Dividing before undoing addition or subtraction.
Tips
- Always do the same operation to both sides.
- Check your answer by substituting it back into the equation.
For parents
Treat the equation as a balance scale, whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
For teachers
Insist students verify each solution by substitution; it catches sign errors and builds confidence.
Key vocabulary
- variable
- an unknown value, often written x
- coefficient
- the number multiplying the variable
Frequently asked questions
- How do you solve a two-step equation?
- Undo addition or subtraction first, then undo multiplication or division, keeping both sides balanced.
- What is a variable?
- A variable is a letter that stands for an unknown number you're solving for, most often x.
