What it is

An exponent is a shorthand for repeated multiplication: $b^{n}$ means the base b multiplied by itself n times.

Why it matters

Exponents are essential for scientific notation, growth and decay, and every branch of higher algebra and science.

How to do it

  1. Identify the base (the number being multiplied) and the exponent (how many times).
  2. Multiply the base by itself that many times.
  3. For same-base products add exponents; for quotients subtract them.

Examples by level

  • Beginner222^{2} =4
  • Intermediate222^{2} ÷ 212^{1} =2
  • Advanced333^{3} =27

Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the base by the exponent instead of using it as repeated multiplication.
  • Adding exponents when bases differ.
  • Mishandling an exponent of 0 or 1.

Tips

  • An exponent of 1 leaves the base unchanged; any base to the 0 power is 1.
  • The exponent is not a multiplier, $3^{4}$ is 81, not 12.

For parents

Read 3⁴ as 'three multiplied by itself four times', not 'three times four'.

For teachers

Introduce the laws only after students are fluent evaluating plain powers, so the laws describe patterns they already see.

Frequently asked questions

What is an exponent?
An exponent tells you how many times to use the base as a factor, 2³ means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.
What is the product of powers rule?
When multiplying powers with the same base, add the exponents: bᵐ × bⁿ = bᵐ⁺ⁿ.
