What it is

Area is the amount of surface a flat shape covers, measured in square units. Before the formulas, you can find it just by counting squares.

Why it matters

Area is a core measurement concept used in flooring, painting, land, and later in integration, and it cements multiplication and fractions.

How to do it

  1. Counting: count the rows and columns of unit squares, then multiply.
  2. Rectangle: length × width.
  3. Triangle: ½ × base × height.
  4. Parallelogram: base × height.

Examples by level

  • Beginner
    2 cm2 cm
    Find the area =4 cm²
  • Intermediate
    3 cm14 cm
    Find the area =42 cm²
  • Advanced
    19 cm21 cm
    Find the area =399 cm²

Examples are generated by the same engine as the worksheets, so they're always mathematically correct. Built to avoid repeats, not reshuffle the same handful of questions.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the ½ in the triangle formula.
  • Using a slanted side instead of the perpendicular height.
  • Reporting area in cm instead of cm².
  • Missing a partial row or column when counting a grid of squares.

Tips

  • Area uses square units (cm²).
  • The height must be perpendicular to the base.

For parents

Count the unit squares inside a shape to make the formula feel real before memorising it.

For teachers

Show why a triangle is half a rectangle to justify the ½ · b · h formula.

Key vocabulary

base
a side used with a height

Frequently asked questions

How do young students first learn area?
By counting how many unit squares cover a shape — a rows-by-columns grid, no formula needed yet.
How do you find the area of a triangle?
Multiply the base by the height and divide by two: ½ × base × height.
Why is area in square units?
Area counts unit squares, so it's measured in cm², m², and so on.
